How to create your own paint colors?  What precautions?

Why create your own paint colors?

Finding the perfect paint isn't always easy. In addition, originality is often synonymous with high price. Nevertheless, if you want to create the shade you like yourself, you just need to make it by mixing several paints.

What are the advantages of creating your own shade of paint?

If you want to get a very accurate color, it can be difficult to find it on the market. The creation is then interesting and represents a saving of time and money.

When you like a shade, you may find it a little too dark or a little too light. By creating it yourself, you avoid these hassles.

The creation of your painting allows you to achieve the decoration you want and the desired assortments.

You save money and you avoid waste. Indeed, the mixture of colors is done from primary paints. However, these are very easily reused as they are or mixed with others, which is not the case with particular shades.

You can create original effects, such as gradients. The solids of several colors are very fashionable. By creating your shade, you can easily make original gradients by combining your blend with the base shades.

How to create its colors? What precautions should be taken?

The principle is simple: you mix several paints, dyes and / or pigments to obtain a new shade. To be able to achieve the entire range of colors of the rainbow, you just need to have three primary colors: cyan blue, yellow and magenta (red). You can mix them at will to get the colors you want.

White and black are separate, because white is only used to lighten the hue and black to darken it.

The three primary colors allow you to obtain several shades:

Blue and red mixed together make purple;

Blue and yellow give green;

Red and yellow make orange;

The three colors mixed together give black.

The secondary colors, obtained by mixing the primary colors, can give other interesting shades:

Violet mixed with blue gives indigo;

Violet and red give purple;

Blue and green give a turquoise;

Orange and yellow give orange yellow;

Orange and red give vermilion;

Green and yellow give an apple green;

To get pink, mix red and white;

To get brown, mix black and red;

To get gray, mix white and black.

Pigment-based mixtures

To create original shades, you can use natural pigments. There are many choices: fluorescent yellow, rosewood, ultramarine purple, lime blue, sienna, blackcurrant red, Havana ocher, etc.

These pigments are simply mixed with white paint and the color will be more or less pronounced and vivid depending on the amount of pigments used. Make sure you record the amount of pigment and note the volume of paint. Mix and add pigments if the shade doesn't suit you. Monitoring the dosage is essential to be sure to always achieve the same shade; in fact, if you finish your pot, you will thus know the right quantity of ingredients necessary to make a new identical mixture.

The material needed for creation

Creating your own paint shades requires materials, including an empty jar. Indeed, it is strongly recommended not to operate directly in a pot already full of paint, because if your mixture does not reflect the desired color and that it is no longer "catch-up", you just have to throw everything away!

Then, you will need a mixer or kneader, to obtain a homogeneous and very uniform mixture, as well as one or more brushes and / or rollers to apply the paint. Make sure to mix the paint thoroughly before applying, especially if you have tinted it with pigments, as these tend to settle to the bottom of the jar. You could then obtain a very irregular and unsightly result on your walls and ceilings.

What precautions should you take when creating your own paint colors?

Always mix in small batches and in separate jars - this makes it easier to find the right shade without wasting large amounts of paint. Scrupulously note your test quantities so that you can reproduce them on a larger scale once the final shade has been chosen. If possible, use round numbers to make it easier to calculate.

It is imperative to test your shade well on a real surface; the color of the paint in the jar is not enough, as the shade may vary once applied and dry. So apply a few brushstrokes in an inconspicuous space in several layers, then wait 1 to 2 weeks for it to dry well and take its final color to paint your wall or to make the necessary modifications.
