What are the characteristics of anti-noise paint?
To design the anti-noise paint, the manufacturing engineers were inspired by snow, and in particular its natural ability to reduce sound thanks to the micro-air pockets it contains and which absorb sound waves. Anti-noise paint or phonic paint was thus marketed in 2013.
The anti-noise paint is an acrylic paint, that is to say with an aqueous base, which contains glass micro-beads. These micro-balls form a sound barrier by storing air, which prevents sounds from propagating through the walls. This paint is available in a matt and white formula, but it is now available in a tinted version to give free rein to your desires. It can also be covered with another coating, such as wallpaper, paneling or earthenware.
On the other hand, to see its effect, it is imperative to apply a specific, sound-proof undercoat. This first application makes it possible to create a double air cushion capable of absorbing noise. On the walls, it isolates you from neighboring rooms; on the ceiling, it protects you from noise coming from upstairs. It is then advisable to apply two coats of anti-noise paint.
This sound paint is washable and has low odor, which is an advantage, but it also offers thermal protection by limiting heat loss. Some individuals have indeed noticed a reduction in their heating bill of around 20%!
Is noise reduction paint effective?
According to studies carried out by the Scientific Center for Building, anti-noise paint would be able to reduce sounds by 3 to 15 decibels. For the human ear, this equates to approximately 50% reduced noise.
The acoustic paint is especially effective and recommended to limit the propagation of high-pitched and shrill sounds such as alarms, ringing, shouting, music or honking. On the other hand, more serious noises, such as those caused by construction work, are hardly attenuated.
How to apply the anti-noise paint?
In itself, anti-noise paint is no more complex than any other to apply. On the other hand, as we said, it is important to carry out two types of applications:
A layer of soundproofing underlay , using a honeycomb roller. Start by clearing your angles and outlines by painting them with a rechampir brush. Then, dip half of the roller in the paint tray and wring it out well by rolling it on the grid to distribute the product better. Work in areas of 1 m², overlapping the borders to avoid delimitations. Systematically make a first horizontal pass, then a second vertical pass (or vice versa) without reloading with paint to better spread the product and not to overload the surface unnecessarily. Let the undercoat dry for at least 4 hours.
Two coats of anti-noise paint applied with a medium-nap roller for optimal coverage and good surface smoothness. For each coat of paint, proceed in the same way as with the undercoat.
Beforehand, it is important to clean your wall or ceiling well before application. Dust them well to promote the adhesion of the painting. Protect your room and think of yourself too.
If your walls are in poor condition, you can cover them with a soundproof glass cloth that will hide imperfections while providing you with better sound comfort.
What is the cost of installing an anti-noise paint?
For the purchase of your anti-noise underlay, count on average 20 euros per liter of product. As for the anti-noise paint, it is invoiced around 25 euros per liter of product.
Knowing that one liter of product covers approximately 4 m², for the application of a layer of anti-noise undercoat and two coats of anti-noise paint, you will need 18 euros on average per square meter.

Add to that the price of your painting utensils:
Count 5 to 20 euros for a honeycomb roll. Be careful and choose a model that matches the type of paint applied. Avoid the first prices, as they tend to wear out very quickly and leave unsightly marks on your painted surfaces.
Count 8 to 20 euros for a roller with medium nap. Obviously, professional models can cost up to 80 dollars, but it is not worth spending so much for a private individual. On the other hand, avoid low prices which may leave marks and hairs on your painted surfaces.
Count 5 to 10 euros for a paint tray and a wringing grid.
Do not forget also the protective tarpaulins to protect your room and the marking tape to delimit the surfaces to be painted.
If you want to hire a professional, count on average 30 to 40 euros per square meter, including supplies and labor.
