Sink or sink for the bathroom? Advantages and disadvantages

Are you planning to build or renovate your bathroom and you hesitate between installing a basin and a washbasin? Each of these devices has advantages and disadvantages, but above all characteristics specific to each of its variations. To better assist you in your choice for your future installation, discover our advice in this complete file.

Washbasin or washbasin: what are the differences?

Both the washbasin and the basin are bathroom equipment solutions that constitute a water point. However, each has its own characteristics which make it possible to differentiate these two devices.

The washbasin is an independent piece of equipment while the washbasin is a piece of equipment placed or integrated into a support. With this in mind, the washbasin is directly connected to the water supply system while the basin taps are indirectly linked to it, by a washbasin top or by a piece of furniture.

So what to choose? It all depends on your desires in terms of aesthetics, functionality and practicality.

The three types of washbasins and their characteristics

There are three types of washbasins: the pedestal washbasin, the wall-mounted washbasin and the totem washbasin.

The pedestal sink

The pedestal washbasin is a so-called monobloc model, because it includes a foot which acts as a pipe cover. More classic, it is an inexpensive solution with a retro design that has long been very successful and has recently come back into fashion. To dress the foot, it is possible to fit it into a low cabinet, but the storage space is limited.

Its advantages: classic and retro, it is suitable for old bathrooms and those with a retro look; the piping is concealed for a more aesthetic effect.

Its disadvantages: no possibility of storage.

The suspended sink

This model is fixed to the wall and is a preferred solution for people with reduced mobility. It is a practical and functional solution that comes in a wide range of sizes, including the smallest. Easy to clean and maintain, it is available in several colors.

Its advantages: easy to clean; it is suitable for small bathrooms and for use by people with reduced mobility; floor space is freed.

Its disadvantages: the piping is visible; no storage space possible.

The totem sink

This very modern model is declined from the pedestal sink, but it is only a single piece that takes the appearance of a foot hollowed out at its top. Design and easy to maintain, it is a somewhat bulky model.

Its advantages: modern style and very design, perfect for contemporary bathrooms; the pipes are completely hidden.

Its disadvantages: complete furniture, but imposing; no storage possibility.

The three types of washbasins and their characteristics

There are three types of washbasins: the countertop washbasin, the built-in washbasin and the washbasin.

The countertop washbasin

As its name suggests, the countertop washbasin is placed on the piece of furniture designed to accommodate it. In this context, it stands out in relief on the top of the furniture. Very aesthetic, it is practical and design, and generally designed to enhance both the basin and the furniture that supports it.

Its advantages: modern and very design model; its airy style is pleasant; it allows a good storage space.

Its disadvantages: its maintenance is more complex.

The built-in washbasin

In this context, the basin is integrated into the bathroom cabinet resting on a shelf. This aesthetic solution makes it possible to leave the lip of the basin visible on the front of the cabinet. While it is now mostly rectangular or square, the built-in washbasin can be round or oval.

Its advantages: this model provides storage space; easy to maintain, it comes in many forms.

Its disadvantages: classic style.

The washbasin

The washbasin is a single, one-piece piece. The top of the cabinet only includes the top and its integrated basin, without breaks or connections. This waterproof and functional solution is very practical in terms of maintenance.

Its advantages: imposing piece of furniture suitable for large bathrooms.

Its disadvantages: it does not fit easily in a small room; unsuitable for people with reduced mobility.
