And if the law theoretically forces dealers to recycle old washing machines, the reality is unfortunately very different. In fact, many of our old machines feed a vast illegal traffic and will end up in the wilderness, once the valuable materials are collected and sold.
How to maintain a washing machine?
Maintaining your washing machine properly will allow it to run efficiently longer and you will see that it is neither complicated nor particularly time-consuming. By following two or three tips and good practices, you will ensure a long life, in the best conditions.
Ecological and economical solutions
The conditions of use, industrial detergents and softeners, the frequency and temperature of washing determine the clogging of your washing machine. In curative or preventive, there are however two products, healthy, ecological, economical and without danger for the maintenance of your machine, which you will soon not be able to do without: white vinegar and sodium bicarbonate.
White vinegar - the cure
Composed of water and acetic acid, white vinegar is the undisputed ally of your washing machine. Degreaser, descaler, disinfectant, deodorant (despite its very pronounced smell), it adds to its many properties, that of softening the laundry. And the icing on the cake, it is non-polluting, biodegradable, non-toxic, if used wisely and it is inexpensive!
Your washing machine is made up of several elements that are susceptible to clogging and on which white vinegar, used alone, works wonders:
The drum ;
The filter ;
Joints ;
The laundry tub;
The water inlet hose;
Porthole.
Here are the 4 steps that will allow you to thoroughly clean your washing machine:
1. Pour 1 liter of white vinegar directly into the drum of the machine and turn it empty, at 90 °.
2. Soak a cloth in pure white vinegar, clean the interior door seal, the drum, the detergent drawer and the porthole.
3. Unscrew the filter by placing a basin underneath to drain the water, remove it gently and rinse it to remove dirt. Clean it with your soaked cloth, or if it is particularly dirty, soak it for ½ hour in a basin of hot water mixed with white vinegar. Dry it and reassemble it.
4. Disassemble the water inlet hose, check that it is not clogged with agglomerated residues and soak it, like the filter, before putting it back in place.
Your washing machine is now as clean as a penny! If you repeat this process every 6 months, you can say goodbye to unpleasant odors and your laundry will be washed better.
Warning: never combine white vinegar with bleach or any other chlorinated product, this mixture produces a toxic gas which is very irritating to the eyes and dangerous for health.
Sodium bicarbonate - the preventative remedy
Sodium bicarbonate (mistakenly called "baking soda") is made from limestone, salt and ammonia, in a chemical process called the "Salvay process" - named after its inventor. Its antiseptic, cleaning, stain-removing and anti-limescale properties make it the second ally of your washing machine. It is also environmentally friendly, it is not toxic and you can use it in many other circumstances at a very low cost too.
